Around a year ago, I started to hear more and more about an online fitness community called Fitocracy. Let me do this. Im not sure how bad it used to be exactly because Im pretty new to Fitocracy. On Matchable alone was 12.6 thousand shares. "Fitocracy is a genius idea. And so at MixergyPremium, I went to Stu Mclaren, the guy who created the Wishlist Member, a plugin that goes into WordPress and turns it into a membership site, and I said first of all, I am looking to build a membership site, would you teach me?, And he did, and I use that to build my site. At what point, Brian, did you get a lawyer for your company? BW: One of our users [named Justin] just posted a before and after photo of himself (below) where he started using Fitocracy back in 2011, and at the time he weighed something like 400 pounds. Now, its interesting, when you look back in the story arc, is that in 2011, we were kind of the heroes of the day. So, we spent about two, two and a half months kind of rebuilding what we had at that time, redesigning it, (?) If we were going to do a startup and pretty much give our entire lives to starting a business we wanted to do something fitness-related. We said, Arnolds going to run or sponsor these monthly challenges for you all, were going to have a new workout for you each month, and you can join these challenges. I already have a Fitocracy account, silly. Yeah, we could have gone and maybe worked on it like some weekends, but there was so much passion and enthusiasm driving us at that point. I am pretty self-motivated, so I dont rely on increasing levels to keep me going to the gym, but after every workout I find myself heading to Fitocracy to add my workout to the site! . Theyre not in the business of teaching, theyre in the business of doing what Ive invited them to teach and then we help them teach. So I would spend a lot of time there. Andrew: So, right around that time you were a product manager at a Connecticut agency and this idea came to you. After Fitocracy, I went on to work as an investor at 500 Startups and a product leader at category-defining companies like Credit Karma and Eaze . Same thing for [??]. So what did they do? So we went part time with our employers for the remainder of 2010 and then January first, 2011, I still remember it, we were just full time, completely. We're excited about where it's headed and we wanted to get it in your hands as soon as we could. But one thing that was interesting thinking back on our childhoods is he actually showed more signs of an entrepreneur than I did growing up. He had never built something that had really focused a lot on certain applying actions and everything thats involved with building an application online today. And eventually an in button made its way to Randall and he signed up and used it because he understood the concept behind what we were doing. Lets create a workout tracker that involves a point system, leveling, achievements and quests. The reason that we always shied away from it was because we perceived it as very competitive. Nothing terribly compelling on that side. user base was quite significant. I remember in January of this year, I was watching the Miss America pageant. Tops half an hour a week, half an hour a month. As a result I usually end up forgetting some of the details of my session or forget to do it altogether so dont bother uploading. I dont need another social network and I dont need external motivation or levels to keep me active. Lets do it!. I suppose I dont really think about ramifying my training, because I dont really need the added motivation.
